
On January 11th, GMS students visited the ORCA Lab to learn about luminescence. First, they investigated the difference between fluorescence and phosphorescence using black lights and
various everyday items (tonic water, paint, highlighters, glow in the dark toys). Next, they used pipettes to dilute dish-washing soap, shampoo, body lotion, detergent, etc.... They inoculated plates of bio-luminescent microbes with the diluted solutions to see the impact of these products on the microbes. They were amazed to
see how many microbes stopped giving off light when they came in contact with the household products.
